Common raven – Bertík and Karel

The people who came across the two raven chicks under the tree brought them to our Prague Wildlife Rescue Centre. Both birds were in very poor condition — exhausted, hungry and dehydrated. Some misfortune must have befallen their parents. Normally, even when chicks fall out of the nest, the parents go on guarding and feeding them on the ground until they can fend for themselves. These chicks, however, had been suffering for some time, and the weaker one sadly died shortly after admission to the centre. Bertík was in slightly better health and survived thanks to the keepers’ attentive care. Because he was left on his own, though, he quickly grew used to the people who brought him food and cleaned his aviary, and it was clear he would not be able to return to the wild. When he is in a good mood, he likes playing with a ball. He moved to the zoo corner at the beginning of 2020, where the older and more experienced raven Karel keeps him company.

Kája worked in the film industry at the Barrandov studios for several years. In time he grew tired of the profession. During rehearsals he stopped cooperating and carrying out tasks the way the film-makers wanted. They could not give him his freedom, though, because he was tame and used to people, so they started looking for a new home for him. That is how he came to our zoo corner in the autumn of 2000. He likes joking around and sometimes surprises us with his acrobatics — sliding down a sloping beam as if it were a slide, for instance. He gets on well with Bertík; they do squabble now and then, but usually more in fun. Both have sharp, strong beaks, though, so it pays to be careful around them.
