How to recognise injured animals that need help:

  • they move with difficulty or unnaturally — birds cannot fly, mammals limp or cannot stand up,
  • they are visibly injured, have open wounds or are bleeding,
  • they are infested with parasites — flies circling around them, eggs or fly larvae in wounds or in the fur,
  • they are active at an unnatural time — nocturnal animals (hedgehogs, bats) during the day, or hibernators (hedgehogs, bats, dormice) during winter,
  • they are somewhere they cannot get out of on their own — a deep pit, a flat, a light well, a chimney and so on.

If you can manage it, catch the animal gently, place it in a box (if its size allows) and put it somewhere quiet and warm. Do not give it any food or water unless you have agreed this directly with a member of the rescue centre staff.
