Mallard – Phoebe, Piper and Prue

Description

Unlike other waterfowl such as geese, swans and other duck species, mallards are not monogamous and do not form lasting pairs. The breeding season is therefore a very stressful time for the females, because the drakes literally pursue them at every step. The ducks often try to escape these pushy suitors and fly as far away from them as they can. In this season we commonly see a duck in flight with several males chasing after her. These chases sometimes end tragically, when the female — but also the males — hit obstacles that appear in front of them in flight. These can be glazed surfaces, but also the walls of buildings. Every year we take in several ducks and drakes injured this way after collisions with buildings and other barriers.

Our three ducks came to us for the same reason, and we named them after the famous witches from the TV series – Phoebe, Piper and Prue. We took them in during 2020 and they had one thing in common: badly broken wings. Two of them lost part of a wing altogether; one has a wing that does not work. That is why they will stay with us at the centre, and besides the benefits of permanently full bowls, clean water in the pools and shelter from bad weather, they also have guaranteed lifelong protection from sexual aggressors.
