Sika deer – Baruška, Jelen and Babča

She was entrusted to colleagues at the Plzeň wildlife rescue centre, who gave her a temporary home. As Baruška grew, she needed more room to run. As a yearling she was therefore moved to our zoo corner in 2016, where she found a permanent new home. Because she had been reared by people and was used to their care, it was not possible to release her back into the wild. She was kept company by the hind Sissi, who had lived in the zoo corner since 2014. At Christmas 2017, however, Baruška was left alone: Sissi suddenly died of serious digestive problems caused by undisciplined visitors to the zoo corner who, despite a strict ban on feeding, fed the animals bread.

So that Baruška would not be lonely, in 2018 we brought her Babča and Jelen from the Vysočina region. Both were born in 2015 and, before they came to us, lived in absolutely unsuitable conditions with a keeper who did not give them proper care. They arrived at the zoo corner dehydrated and undernourished. Jelen is a sweet, quiet companion. Even during the rut he is rather shy, and when he needs to let off steam he does not turn on the hinds or on people. He has a barrel hung up in his pen that he takes on when the need arises. After arriving at the zoo corner he fell for Baruška. When their fawn was born — unusually, in winter — both hinds, Baruška and Babča, looked after it. They each lay down on one side of it on a bed of hay and together sheltered it from the cold and wind.

Babča is a caring and responsible mother who fiercely protects every youngster around her. Three months after arriving at the zoo corner she gave birth to a fawn, which the vet and a keeper examined and treated. The new mother did not like that at all. The next time the keeper entered the pen, Babča still had it in for her over the unsolicited medical examination and kicked her out. Otherwise, though, she has a gentle nature and has never attacked a person on any other occasion than the extraordinary situation around her fawn.
