Little owl – Mr and Mrs Sýček

Description

She had jesses on her legs, so it was clear somebody had kept her in captivity. Because she was already tame and used to human company, we could not simply release her into the wild. Her owner was never found, so she was placed in the zoo corner. In 2016 Miss Sýčková gained a partner. We took in a little owl from the Huslík rescue centre that had been hit by a car. His serious wing injury could not be fully healed, so he could not return to the wild either — trouble flying would not allow him to find food. And so the pair of little owls became Mr and Mrs Sýček. 🙂 Our little owls are very fond of mice. They polish off several every day, and if a mouse happens to be left over, they hide it in the nest box or in one of the gaps in the mesh. They then defend all their secret mouse stores valiantly, even against the keepers who clean their aviary.
