Northern raccoon – Bonnie

Description

She came to us together with her sibling Clyde as a small youngster that had lost its nest and could not yet fend for itself. The siblings have been in the zoo corner since 2015.

Raccoons are considered an invasive, non-native species in Czech nature, so even once they were reared they could not be released back into the wild. Both have been used to people since they were small and are not afraid of them. Not even during their games do they let spectators disturb them. They have nimble paws and can even move hand over hand across the ceiling. Cones fall onto the roof of their aviary, and both raccoons love collecting them and throwing them to the ground, where they then play with them. On top of that, the keepers think up and bring them all sorts of other toys. The older they get, though, the more often they rest. They love sponge biscuits, walnuts, pears and grapes, which give them plenty of fun too as they roll the individual grapes along the ground. In winter you will only glimpse them occasionally. When it is cold outside, they stay tucked up in their box, dozing snuggled in the hay.
