Carrion crow and hooded crow – Monika and Hilary

2 000

Monika, a carrion crow, was found by people as a small abandoned nestling and brought to our former forester.

Description

His wife took her in and reared her. The crow quickly became tame, though, and so she had to stay in the zoo corner. She has been with us since 2009. Even though she is getting on in years, she has not lost her playfulness. She often amuses herself pecking at a ball or watching visitors, whom she greets with a caw.

Hilary the hooded crow arrived at our zoo corner in 2015. She was flitting about Prague-Dubeč and fearlessly eyeing passers-by. One of them was unsettled by the bird’s behaviour and called our Prague Wildlife Rescue Centre to say he had found a bird of prey that was not afraid at all. The bird of prey turned out to be Hilary. People had probably taken her from the wild as a nestling and kept her at home as a pet. When she flew away from them, she went looking for the human company she was used to.

Both crows love nuts and mice. Monika is always quicker, though: she collects all the mice and hides the ones she cannot eat from Hilary. When they fancy something juicier, they enthusiastically fall upon yellow melon, grapes or blueberries.
