Fénix was hit by a car and sadly had such a complicated wing fracture that, despite all our efforts, it could not be saved and he eventually lost the wing. He has adapted well to life at the centre, though, and — as far as we can tell — captivity does not stress him. When one of the keepers enters the aviary, Fénix never forgets to greet them, and as long as nobody intrudes into his comfort zone he is content and does not take fright. For a long time he was alone in the aviary, with only occasional company from other buzzards recovering from their injuries in the flight aviary. It was not until 2019 that Keira came to us — and it was love at first sight. It was not immediately obvious to us keepers, of course, but the two of them probably knew very quickly. 🙂 They formed a pair, and because Keira cannot return to the wild either, owing to injuries from a collision with a car, nothing will separate them now.
